Early Intervention Services

Feeding Therapy

WeeTalk’s Early Intervention Feeding Therapists are committed to supporting caregivers along with their babies and toddlers by promoting safe and comfortable mealtimes whether it be breast, bottle, puree, or table foods.

Feed Therapy | Reading, PA

Our feeding therapists partner with you to create an environment where you can begin to feel less stress around feeding your little one.

Our therapists work closely with babies/toddlers and their families to discover the source of the child’s difficulties and offer specific strategies and put supports in place to make the entire process of eating easier and more enjoyable.

Our highly trained therapists utilize your child’s daily routines to target learning opportunities that occur naturally so that learning new skills will seem easy.

Feeding Therapy | Reading, PA

Please know that “feeding” is a specialty within a specialty.  Not all OT’s and SLP’S are trained in pediatric feeding, and not all pediatric therapists have advanced feeding therapy education and practice either. Our feeding therapists (both OT and SLP) are trained extensively and continually in pediatric feeding development and disorders.

Our Feeding Therapists target areas when your child is having difficulty:

  • Weaning from breast or bottle
  • Efficiently and safely consume bottles
  • Coughing, gagging, or choking during drinking or eating
  • Accepting oral feedings when a feeding tube is in place *if determined safe by doctors
  • Safely drinking from a cup
  • Eating purees
  • Eating table foods
  • Chewing foods
  • Expanding foods into their diet (picky eating)
  • Enjoying mealtime routines due to anxiety/stress
  • Gaining weight *if determined necessarily by doctors
WeeTalk knows that the most important piece of being a Feeding Therapist in Early Intervention is remembering that everything we do during sessions focuses on the entire family and their daily lives. Our Feeding Therapists will partner with you, the caregiver, and find ways to incorporate the exercises/strategies throughout all meals/snacks/feedings.

Seek Early Intervention if

As a newborn your baby is not:

  • Latching to breast or bottle
  • Gaining weight
  • Able to consume 2-3 oz without falling asleep
  • Keeping feeds down (excessive spit up/vomiting)
By 6 months your child is not:

  • Eager to begin feeding when bottle or food is in sight
  • Bringing hands to mouth
  • Coordinating suck and swallow during feedings
  • Gaining appropriate weight
  • Opening mouth to begin to accept strained/pureed foods
By 8 months your child is not:

  • Mouthing toys or food items
  • Holding bottle
  • Easily consuming pureed foods
  • Eating soft table foods
By 12 months your child is not:

  • Eating finger foods and purees
  • Beginning to chew foods
  • Beginning to self-feed finger foods
  • Holding spoon
  • Able to drink from a sippy or straw cup
By 18 months your child is not:

  • Eating table foods
  • Drinking from cup
  • Scooping foods with spoon and bringing to mouth
By 24 months your child is not:

  • Understanding food vs. non-food items
  • Gives dishes to parent when all done
  • Exploring foods with hands
  • Eating diet of the family
  • Able to wash hands
If your child has a feeding tube in place and is cleared to consume liquids or food by mouth, don’t hesitate to reach out and seek help.  Babies don’t just “know” how to move from a tube to oral feeding and it can be a scary process for child and parent.
*Anytime you notice regression or loss of skills, contact your child’s pediatrician, and reach out to WeeTalk to start a referral to Early Intervention immediately.
